Has the electric gone off in your Brislington home? No need to fear, Fairway Electrical are here with some expert advice to get you back up and running.
Stop
First thing is don’t panic!
Look
Next thing to do is go to your fusebox, Lift or remove your cover (you shouldn’t need a screwdriver
for this). It’s always handy to keep a torch near by (make sure it’s charged or has batteries). If you’ve lost
your lights at night, it will be dark and with 90% of old houses in Bristol the fuse box will be under
your stairs covered in coats and welly boots!
Has any thing tripped out? With a modern MCB or RCD if it has tripped out it would be facing
down. An MCB or RCD looks like a toggle switch, If you don’t have toggle switches you may have an
older style fuse box which use fuse wire. You would need to pull the fuse out and inspect the wire
to see if it in intact
Have you lost power to the whole house?
Or is it just your sockets or lights? Check the green LED light on your Smoke alarms is on.
Is the fridge working? Or even worse are the kids screaming Mum we’ve got no Wifi.
Listen
If nothing looks unusual then pop your head out your front door to see if its just your house or if
your neighbour is standing out side as well? It could be a power cut in local area.
Another thing to listen out for, if it’s a power cut in the area intruder alarms will be going off.
What should I do now?
If its not just your house call your local operator/supplier. There may be a fault in your area, but don’t
worry, they probably already know about it and will be dealing with the fault.
If its just your house then you need to go back to your fusebox, the heart of your electrical
installation.
If any MCB’s or RCD’s have tripped out then switch them back on. If you put them back on and
power is restored then great you can carry on with life.
But what happens if it goes bang again?
Chances are you have a fault and the fusebox has done its job. Brilliant because its done its job
(and potentially saved your life), but not as you have no power.
