When should I carry out an EICR?

I highly recommend homeowners to have an electrical safety check, also known as an EICR every 10 years for peace of mind. An EICR or electrical installation condition report is also proposed if you are deciding to sell your property or even purchase a new property. As an experienced electrician, I also suggest customers conduct an EICR if they notice electrical faults such as flickering lights or scorch marks on plug faces.

What is an EICR?

An EICR is a safety check on all electrical features, the inspection can only be carried out by a qualified electrician such as myself. Any faults found during the inspection are assigned a code which identifies its severity.
The codes assigned are:

  • Code 1 C1- A high risk fault has been identified at the property. As a qualified electrician, it is my responsibility to secure the premises before I leave. A=The faults identified may be hazardous to life or could lead to electric shocks or electrical fires, they need remedies immediately.
  • Code 2 C2- A fault or hazard has been identified but as the homeowner, you have 28 days to correct this.
  • Code 3 C3- This suggests that I’ve identified a fault or hazard which could be classed as minor. It would be my suggestion to improve the fault but it is not a requirement.
  • FI- Further investigation is required.

What's involved?

As a local resident of Bristol, I’m very familiar with the style of homes so I know how important it is to complete all electrical services such as electrical safety checks in a timely manner.

The process is straightforward and stress free. Once you’ve booked your appointment with us, we can arrange for an inspection at your property. I will conduct a number of visual checks but also use electrical equipment designed for testing purposes.

I check all electrical features in your home, including:

  • Indoor and outdoor lighting.
  • Switches, plug sockets and plug faces.
  • The fusebox or consumer unit.
  • Any exposed wiring.
  • Additional features you might have such as underfloor heating, solar panels or even an electric vehicle charge point.

During the inspection, I will also identify any hazards such as damaged cables, exposed wiring, any loose connections and any circuits that are overloaded.

I record any faults and recommend remedial work where necessary. Homeowners usually have 28 days to ensure all faults are rectified. Once I’m satisfied with the electrical aspects in your home and feel they comply with industry regulations, you’ll receive a satisfactory domestic EICR.

What are the different types of EICR?

As a homeowner, there are actually two different types of EICR that you can choose from:
A visual condition report is not a full inspection of the electrical systems but might be more suitable if the electrical installations at your home were inspected recently.

A periodic inspection report is much more extensive, a full review is carried out by a qualified electrician. Feel free to get in touch if you would like more information about the different types of EICRs.
